What has happened in microbiome research in Medicon Valley since 2000? How does Medicon Valley compare with other microbiome hubs in the United States and Europe when it comes to productivity and quality of research? And what do microbiome hubs such as APC Microbiome Ireland, Euregional Microbiome Center and NCCR Microbiomes have in common?

“These are questions we will answer at our next event,” says Sarah Lidé, Senior Strategy & Project Manager at Medicon Valley Alliance. She is referring to the Microbiome Signature Project: Project Outcomes and Future Outlook event that will take place on 7 June at the Hub Nordic conference centre in Ørestad, some five kilometres south of the Copenhagen city centre. “At the event we will not only present the outcomes from our three-year project, but also reveal the results from a brand-new study we have conducted,” she says.

The study is mainly focused on three things; the mapping and quality of microbiome research papers; a comparison between successful microbiome hubs; and a presentation of what a future microbiome research platform in Medicon Valley could look like.

The microbiome research field is still very young, but for the past few years, interest has grown rapidly. Globally, more than 96,000 microbiome-related publications have been published since 2000, with more than 50 percent of them having been published in the last three years (2019-2021). This exponential growth in microbiome research activity is mirrored in Medicon Valley, where 1,627 publications have been published since 2000, with 57 percent of them having been published in the last three years (2019-2021). Of these 1,627 publications, 55 percent were led by researchers affiliated to Medicon Valley as indicated by first or last authorship.

The Microbiome Signature Project who hosts the event aims to strengthen the collaboration and synergies across borders and disciplines in the Medicon Valley area, spanning eastern Denmark and the southernmost part of Sweden. Another aim is to boost investments in microbiome research and innovation. The results from the project, which is funded by Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak, will be presented at the 7 June event.

This event offers an excellent opportunity for you to expand your professional network within the microbiome field.

We have invited Medicon Valley’s leading microbiome scientists and companies, research talents and start-ups, key opinion leaders and investors, so it’s a good place to be if you would like to meet with new fellow colleagues and be inspired by interesting speakers,”

Sarah says.
